Discovering America Through My Lens: A 6-Day Road Trip Across 10 States

I Took A Road Trip To Virginia

There’s something special about packing up, hitting the open road, and embracing the unknown. This 6-day road trip across ten diverse states wasn’t just about photographing beautiful places—it was about pushing my boundaries and exploring with fresh eyes. I wanted to capture each moment and share the beauty, history, and spirit of each state along the way. Here’s a peek into the journey and the unique stories behind each photo.

Wyoming & Colorado Green Sand and Rustic Charm

Wyoming offered striking contrasts, from unique green sand structures to historic old buildings and barns, each with its own weathered story. This part of the trip reminded me that even the smallest, most unexpected details can transform a scene. Capturing the raw beauty of Wyoming’s structures challenged me to see architecture in a new light—its past held in every line and shadow.

The Limon heritage museum

Nestled in the small town of Limon, Colorado, the Limon Heritage Museum preserves the rich history of the eastern plains. Originally a railroad town, Limon has seen its share of pivotal moments, and the museum captures these through fascinating exhibits, including vintage train cars, pioneer artifacts, and a collection of photographs from the early 1900s. Visitors can explore the history of transportation and agriculture that shaped the region, making it a captivating stop for history lovers and travelers alike.

Old Town Burlington Colorado

Old Town Museum in Burlington, Colorado, offers a vibrant look at the American West. This recreated town features historic buildings, from a saloon to a blacksmith shop, each telling a piece of pioneer history. Highlights include a vintage carousel, old-fashioned general store, and hands-on exhibits that bring the Wild West era to life. The museum captures the spirit of early frontier life, making it an ideal place for history enthusiasts and families to experience the past up close.

Kansas: Churches, Cathedrals, and Fort Hays

Kansas introduced me to some of the country’s most awe-inspiring places of worship and history. St. Ann’s Church, the magnificent Cathedral of the Plains, and Fort Hays offered moments of quiet reflection and reverence. As I photographed these sacred and historical sites, I was challenged to capture not just their beauty, but their significance—what they meant to the people who built them and the communities they served.

Fort Hays, Kansas

Originally established in 1865, Fort Hays played a crucial role in the American West during a time of conflict and expansion. Positioned near Hays, Kansas, the fort served as a military outpost to protect settlers, railroad workers, and travelers on the plains. Known for its associations with famous figures like General George Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody, Fort Hays became a symbol of resilience on the frontier. Today, the site features restored buildings, historical exhibits, and artifacts, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience life on the frontier. Highlights include the officers’ quarters, guardhouse, and museum, all offering a glimpse into the fort’s storied past and its impact on Kansas and the West.

Tennessee: Music City’s Heart and Soul

Tennessee was a highlight, especially Nashville, where I immersed myself in the musical heart of America. From the iconic Ryman Auditorium to the lively Broadway and the Musicians Hall of Fame, Tennessee challenged me to capture the rhythm and spirit of a city that lives and breathes music. These photos tell the story of Nashville, a city that welcomes everyone with open arms and a beat that’s impossible to resist.

Ending the journey in Virginia felt like the perfect finale. The vibrant autumn colors of Grayson Highlands Park painted the landscape in warm, fiery hues, making every shot feel like a dream.
